Ways to Reduce Storm Water Pollution

  1. Check your vehicle for fuel and oil leaks. Repair those leaks.
  2. Leave grass clippings on your lawn as an alternate nutrient to fertilizer or use zero phosphorus fertilizer. Limit use of pesticides.
  3. Dispose of pet waste in trash cans.
  4. Wash your car on the lawn so water, dirt and chemicals are filtered through the lawn. Or go to a car wash (where the water is treated).
  5. Landscape for water quality by planting trees and raingardens. Also, use native plantings in your home's landscape. They are best suited for Michigan's climate.
  6. Inspect and pump your septic system every three years.
  7. Nothing but rain down the drain! Only rain or snow melt should go into storm drains. Never dump oil, trash, paint, etc. down a storm drain. Use Kent County's Household Hazardous Waste Program (ph. 336-2570 or 1-888-217-2850).
  8. Decrease the amount of impervious surfaces such as parking lots, driveways, or roofs.
